Aleksander Kolkowski’s mentors have included John Tilbury, Hugh Davies & John Cage. Over the past 20 years he has worked internationally as an improvising violinist, interpreter, solo performer and composer for dance, theatre and film. His latest work combines instruments and machines from the pioneering era of sound recording and reproduction (horned violins, wind-up gramophones, shellac discs and wax-cylinder phonographs) to make live mechanical-acoustic music. Since 1999, he has actively explored the potential of pre-electronic sound reproduction technology in live performance. This work has been shown in Germany, Holland, Poland, Italy, Austria & the U.S.A., and featured on WDR & Deutschlandradio radio stations.
In 2002 he founded Recording Angels, a series that examines our relationships to recorded sound using antiquated home-recording devices such as phonographs and acetate record cutters in performances and installations. Recently, Mechanical Landscape with Bird (2004 -MaerzMusik, Berliner Festspiel) featured live singing canaries, wax cylinder phonograph recordings and a rotating horned string quartet.
Vocal artist Ute Wassermann is a composer/ performer, improviser and interpreter of contemporary music. She studied at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts, and since 1984 she has developed many special multivoiced vocal techniques, catalogued by register, timbre and articulative sequences, which may be deconstructed and/or superimposed and used to explore spatial resonance phenomena. She has collaborated frequently with composers who have created works especially for her voice, and has performed with many ensembles including ASKO, Elision and Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin.
