The Black Rat Death Squad is...
Büna - Guitar & Vox
El Butcho - Guitar & Vox
Swimsuit Edition - Bass
Top Dollar - Drums
Hailing from the Scottish rock capital of Glasgow, UK The Black Rat Death Squad have been plying their unique brand of Death-Surf Punk Rock n Roll since late 2007, although the band prefers to describe themselves as "Surfing a tsunami with a knife in your teeth while shagging a dead guy.."
Bonded by a shared love of Roy Orbison, Dick Dale, The Tornados, 60's pop, 80's hardcore, Ivor Cutler, Sabbath, Springsteen and Scandinavian Rock n Roll it’s a sound rooted in the rock of yore, firing from wildly disparate angles whilst maintaining a vitality that has been described as “equal measures raucous and unpredictable... whisky-fuelled and all the better for it” (The Fly).
Such an approach has gained them fans from the likes of Ginger Wildheart and Les Carter (Carter USM) and shows with bands as diverse as Fucked Up, Supersuckers, 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster, King Khan & The Shrines, The Koffin Kats, Doomriders, Nashville Pussy, The Real McKenzies, The Unseen and Pissed Jeans.
Add to this one successful Scandinavian tour which almost ended in disaster after El Butcho carved a pentagram into his chest with a piece of glass which Büna then ate. Two days later he was rushed to hospital in Stockholm where he spent the night with a tube into his stomach but signed himself out in the morning because the band couldn’t afford another low-cost Ryanair flight home for him.
The band will released their debut 7” in Autumn ’09 on Rattus Rattus Records with a full length due early 2010.
PRESS:
The Skinny - "Big riffs, bigger solos and enormous fun as (The Black Rat Death Squad) give a theatrical, snarling, faux-misogynistic performance."
The Scotsman - "Glasgow's Black Rat Death Squad have already earned a reputation as local legends thanks to their anarchic live shows. With influences ranging from crust punk to Norwegian black metal, the band's sound falls somewhere towards the post-hardcore end of the punk spectrum, with a healthy dose of straight-up rock'n'roll mixed in for good measure."
The List - "Local troublemakers Black Rat Death Squad thrashed and cussed like slack-jawed pop punkers on an Iggy death trip..."
Perthshire Advertiser - ".....like The Shadows and Black Flag in a fight to the death."
