Zaar Appears on Hidden Door 2 (The Police Box 15) » “I love the Iranian-influenced rhythms and melodies of this group and the way the instruments swoop in and out of the mix. If anyone knows the name of the instrument that comes in at around 2m23s, give me a shout because I need to buy one.” Frankie Lo Log in to download tracks |
GOL is an exciting new Edinburgh band creating a unique sound by crossing musical boundaries between East and West (specifically UK and Iran) informed by jazz, world, pop and electronica.
After releasing their debut album Red Earth on Artifact Records in 2006, GOL re-formed in late 2008 and are Roxana Pope on Vocals (Persian & English), Pete Vilk (Drum kit & samples), Yann Seznec (Keyboards & live sampling), Allan Ferguson (Bass), Mat Clements (Percussion) and John Burgess (Saxophones, clarinet & guitar)
Recent gigs include Bush Hall London (broadcast to 1.5 million viewers on BBC TV's KOOK music program), Filmhouse Edinburgh, Roxy Art House Knockengorroch Festival, Kelborn Garden Party and The Big Tent Festival & Edinburgh's MELA 2009.
Their EP “ Roots” is out now and available on hard-copy via http://www.codamusic.co.uk/product-detail/44201/Gol/Roots+Ep
I saw and heard GOL for the first time at the 2009 Edinburgh Mela. Unlike some 'fusion' bands I've seen, including a very very famous one, they manage to blend world/jazz/ethnic and GOL so that you can't hear the joins. You can see the band are enjoying playing and they play tracks dealing with serious subjects without preaching and witout a hint of condescension. GOL sing and play as a band with no jostling for position. I was really impressed, will 'tell all my friends' and will be looking out for recordings.
I felt the same when I saw them at Kelburn Garden Party back in June. 'GOL':sounds a bit like 'soul' ...but more like 'sol', sun and soul... Keep up the good work!
