To learn that Brighton born saxophonist John Butcher has a PhD in theoretical physics makes perfect sense when you consider the enquiring approach he takes to his instrument. Whether exploring its multiphonic possibilities acoustically or using it as a feedback chamber for amplified improvisation, Butcher’s creative use of the saxophone’s sonic potential shows a real sensitivity to the instrument as a physical implement for discovery.
Remarkably his free approach to technique goes hand in hand with an equally varied musical imagination as an improviser. Having originally played conventional jazz, Butcher’s language has broadened into a vast vocabulary of buzzes, clicks, hums and squeals, often occurring in the same breath as lyrical, melodic passages. In recent years his interest has moved toward sparser work which allows for forays into microtonal playing and harmonics.
Butcher’s versatility has won him a reputation as one of the world’s leading improvising saxophonists and work alongside notable collaborators such as Toshimaru Nakamura, Gino Robair, John Edwards and Dylan van der Shyff. Increasingly busy and prolific, Butcher’s live and recorded output shows no sign of abating amidst his ever growing stature on the world’s improvised music circuit.
