About King Creosote

In the late nineties one man with a healthy cynicism for music industry set out to make home-recorded music in as stress-free an environment as possible. The heels were dug in and N.E. Fife would become home to Fence Records. We proudly present the King.

Punchbag

Appears on The Police Box 7 »

No longer publically available anywhere but here, 'Punchbag' is released in celebration of the recently finished Oxjam and Fence Homegame Festivals, 2009. Understated but assured, this song exhibits cornerstone qualities of much of KC's subsequent work.

King Creosote Profile

In 1995 Kenny Anderson, then lead singer/songwriter for the Scottish bands Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra and Khartoum Heroes, launched his own label ‘Fence’ as an outlet for his own solo project King Creosote.

With a few CDR titles released through local shops, and with brothers Een (Pip Dylan) and Gordon (Lone Pigeon, one of The Aliens) forming the beginnings of a Fence Collective, by summer 2000 Fence had taken over the running of a St. Andrews record shop, had an extensive website up and running, and were packing out the local pubs once a fortnight. Collective member James Yorkston made sure that the Fence music came to the attention of labels like Bad Jazz and Domino and the legendary Fence gatherings were soon on the move.

Kenny and Beth’s Musakal Boatrides, released in 2003, was a compilation of Kenny’s CDR recordings, this was followed by Rocket DIY (2005), KC Rules OK (2005) and Bombshell (2007). In the meantime he has continued to plough his own particularly individual furrow with still more CDR releases, sometimes under the Kwaing Creasite alter-alter ego. Fence has also done wonders for the tourist trade in The East Neuk of Fife, making it an unlikely Mecca for music fans, particularly during the annual Homegame Festival, now a regular feature on Fence fan calendars.

Punchbag is taken from King Creosote’s ‘Stinks’ Originally released in February 2000 and described by the man himself as

‘A not exactly best of -  fragrant melodies, sprawling crailscapes and an odd whiff here and there. Surely the soundtrack to an offshore crab tango’

Stinks is a lost classic (although the King might beg to differ) in the KC back catalogue and this is a rare opportunity to dip your toe in its waters.

King Creosote’s new album “Flick The Vs” is out on 20th April on the Domino label, and the single “Coast on By” will be available as a digital download from April 27th. See the Domino website for more info
