Popolo are a young four piece instrumental band originally from the East of Scotland and despite only being in existence for one year can boast artwork by David Shrigley(Blur, Deerhoof) and recommendations from Vic Galloway and Jim Gellatly. Having already performed with 65 Days of Static, Errors, Dananananaykroyd, Copy Haho, X-Certs and Tricky and an upcoming gig with Pivot(Warp) the band are cutting their live music teeth with some of the most exciting bands going. Heavily influenced by Warp, Border Community and Bpitch artists, Popolo incorporate dance music theory with rock practice to create concise blasts of breakneck pop.
awful, just awful. not original and incredibly bland. using buzz word tags such as "wonk pop" doesn't make it much better, unless of course you accidentally put the wrong vowel in 'wonk'. jungle rhythm? you must be kidding; popolo wouldn't know a jungle rhythm if it hit them in the face.
An amusing if highly controversial point. Thoughts anyone? OK mine are... if you can't see that the end of Or Optimism is 'wonky' in a charming - i.e. 'Pop' - way then I'm not sure what 'wonky' means. Certainly nothing wanky about it anyway. Be gentle, they're new - and not claiming to be Radiohead now. If Pop music was dominated by bands like Popolo rather than the status quo, then the world might be a better place. OK I'm gushing... 'concise' is definitely true, and it comes over even more live that they are leaving the audience wanting more rather than over-indulging. The structure of the track is a common one, but rendered less predictable as the presence of a false chorus drum fill means we are left with a sense of anticipation over 'verse' 3 (upon 2nd and subsequent listenings of course), heightening the sense of release at the lovely wall-of-sound bit.
If Or Optimism doesn't float your boat then that's the case, but this post smacked to me of someone judging before listening to the whole tune. Always remember, I'm biased... so I'd happily be contested on this of course.
