The Police Box: The Police Box 8
This month we invited new Edinburgh electronica festival curators UniqueBeats.co.uk to showcase some talent from around Scotland, alongside our more organic selection. The result? You decide.
Just to Pause This
Amplifico
One of See Heart See Muscle's several big tunes. Melancholy tinged with hope/love with hate? Longing tinged with desire for being free of it? Smokers, this is one for the 'fico fan in you!
Moviegoer (currently only available in hard-copy)
Panda Su
Recently given a very favourable mention in The Scotsman Moviegoer is another example of impeccably imperfect popfection for the wistful. To continue our habit of namedropping, Steve Mason sings backing in this one (what a modest chap!)
Nightingale Falls
Lipsync for a Lullaby
Dynamically hugely varied, Nightingale Falls evokes the image of a bird buffeted by the extremes of nature. The human condition is brought into picture by vocal guest, poet and previous Police Box contributor, JL Williams.
Toad
Melvitronica
Great drum breaks and plenty false summits, just what gets TT going in a loop based track. Great brooding woodwind melodies too, and an almost cultlike bass drone make this esoteric hip hop indeed. Would 'hippy-hop' be a bridge too far?
Return Of The Uber Dub
B Burg And Whys
The guitar line's quality is a given, but check the timeless bassline. Great atmos and not just atmos altogether to engage your relaxation centres throughout the track.
Mullokian (Dimlite's 6th Rellokian)
FOUND
Another great remix. This time by Dimlite, who admirably keeps Ziggy's voice mostly in tact and builds some really interesting sounds around a whimsical yet edgy story.
A Touch Of Frost
Araya
Perhaps it's not the season for frost, but there's no time like the present for progressive electronica, employing blissful high frequencies, expressive bass and a diverse palate of rhythmic cultures, to take an eclectic audience well and truly with it.
She's A Day Later
Laki Mera
A wide orbit of influences: the tender and thoughtful vocal tone and bassline prominent, polished production recalls Massive Attack, where there's a hint of Suzanne Vega in the melody. we'd say Trip pop for the connoisseur if we wre qualified to say...
Your Shoal
Iona Marshall
“I love 'Your Shoal' - brilliant track and great singing. Groove and interplay between guitar, drums, bass reminds me of Venus In Furs by the VU.” Mike Scott, The Waterboys.
