Benbecula: Benbecula Retrospective
Kilgore Lives
Syntaks
Somewhere between science fiction and science fact lies Syntaks alchemical blend of rhythm, melody and evolving sound effect. This is an extremely richly textured departure from your electronica comfort-zone (if there was such a thing, scholars).
Sferics
Reverbaphon
Ten Tracks loves cross-rhythms... Ahead-of-their-time glitches aren't bad either. We therefore love Reverbaphon. Immensely. Highly recommended for experimental electronica and Math-rock lovers alike.
Best Served Cold
Plum
Shards and oscillations of sophisticated electronic production, underpinned by brooding drum loop and abrasive bass, create the cold background needed for Plum's close-up voice of intent.
Eezeebreez Demo
Christ
Christians, look no further than here for a miracle... a previously un-released exquisite demo version of this track from 2003's Metamorphic Reproduction Miracle LP - gleaming sonic fabrics sown with the thread of rare skill.
Hit The Spot
Brian Ellis
Multi-talented Brian Ellis purveys what Benbecula see to be 'possibly one of the most unique blends of sound to be produced this decade'. This previously unreleased mix from the Silver Creature sessions (2007) shows why.
Minutiae
Prhizzm
What's essential about this track is its evident contribution to the techniques currently enjoyed by the likes of Warp signing Hudson Mohawke (discovered by Ten Tracks channel curators LuckyMe). Let us know if you agree. Top-notch track artwork too...
Fluted
Greenbank
Another gem from the Benbecula retrospective. This one a very forward looking track for 2003, with sure hints at what will become 'dubstep' in about 4 years time, complete with now customary high-end synth loops.
Untitled
Phase 6
This track consists of orderly/random melodic synth loops which seem highly Philip Glass-inspired, augmented with compulsively wrong-footing drum-part development, which is wholly not inspired by Philip Glass. Makes for a re-listen or three.
Napoli
Ochre
Sown with tasteful proportions and instrumental variety, this track reaps beauty and dignity as its deserved rewards. It doesn't sound like electronic music, but it is.
